The Island Part Four
At first I thought it might be Kell looming over me. I hoped with all my heart it was Kell. The pungent aroma of bitter almonds told me different. I made to rise off the bed.
“ Hello…no please, don’t get up on my account. The door was open, I hope you don’t mind me coming in.”
I relaxed back onto the bed, even though I felt anything but relaxed. This man oozed fear from his every pore. He had an unpleasant presence which terrified me.
“ I saw you come in on the early morning boat this morning. Perhaps you didn’t notice me standing on the pier waiting?”
Clearly this man totally overestimated his attempts to play the grey man and blend in with his surroundings virtually un-noticed.
“ I was waiting for somebody who was to bring me something. A small package. And I wasn’t entirely sure of the exact identity of who that person might be. I simply follow instructions. It’s better that way, everything on a need to know basis. Don’t you think?”
I said nothing. I didn’t know who he was nor what he wanted, nor was I interested to know to be honest. I just wanted him gone out of my room as soon as possible. But I was totally defenceless laying back prone on my single bed. For all I knew, he had a weapon concealed about him which he could draw anytime he liked and it would be good night Vienna for me.
A thought flashed across my mind that this was who the ghost girl was referring to when she said my life was in danger. I was literally waiting for my grizzly end to come any moment he felt like it.
“ Is that your bag?” He asked nodding in the direction of my soft back-pack on the floor . My only response was to look towards the bag.
“ Do you mind?” He said politely as he bent to pick up the bag. As if I had any choice in the matter.
Mind? Hell yeah I minded. I minded very much to a complete stranger inviting himself into my room to interrogate me and rifle through my bag.
All the bag contained was a couple of changes of clothing. The only thing that might have aroused suspicion that I was carrying whatever package it was he wanted was my book, ‘Beyond the Body’ which rested on my bedside table.
Mister bitter almonds picked up the book and leafed through it. Then he closed it to read the front cover.
“ Ahhhhh, beyond the Body.’ How very, very interesting.” He cooed. “ But it is not what I was hoping to locate.” He looked somewhat disappointed.
“ Please, think very carefully before you answer my next question. Your life could depend on you giving me an honest answer.”
My nerves were at the point of not holding out much longer. I glanced over to the door and tried to calculate if I could make it out of here alive and unharmed. It was no use. The room was too small and he was very effectively blocking my path.
“ Did you see anything suspicious on the boat trip over? Perhaps that young lady backpacker, who by the way I know you met up with earlier at the museum……did she throw anything overboard? Or perhaps the two workers, did they behave in a way you would consider abnormal? Come on, you’re an observant young man. You young people see a lot more than you crack on, I find. Did you see anything at all untoward?”
I simply shook my head in the negative, I was just so darned terrified I couldn’t utter a single word. Who knows, maybe his next move would be to unceremoniously stick a podgy finger up my backside, just like the Swiss border guard I mentioned earlier.
“ Very well young man, I shall take my leave. If you do recall anything at all, the innocent looking throw of an arm in the direction of the sea, anything please be sure to tell me.
If you hold out on me I will know. And I will not be pleased at all. I do find honesty brings its own reward. As indeed does dishonesty, if you know what I mean. I think you do, hm?”
And with that mister bitter almonds simply turned and left. My thoughts were racing. What the hell was that all about? What the devil have I walked into here? My mind was not only racing, it was spinning almost out of control.
Suddenly I heard footsteps coming towards my room. The aroma of bitter almonds still lingered. The state I was in, only the lord knew what was coming next. I braced myself for the worst. Maybe mister bitter almonds had had second thoughts and had decided to return to bump me off anyway, just to be safe. A large shadow loomed in the doorway. I waited for the sound of a muffled pistol crack and the sudden demise of my own pathetic life. I’m not sure if any of us is ever ready for our premature end. In the doorway an indistinct arm extended outwards in my direction……
