I am so much more than meets the eye

Photograph by Sara Ratel

Well, all you guys on Illumination-Curated know me as Liam Ireland, writer and editor at Illumination. Just like the rest of you I write articles, short stories and poetry, which I submit to this wonderful writers platform.

I must admit that even as a professional writer in a previous life I struggled a bit when I started out on my Illumination journey. I was used to pen and paper, not a keyboard and digital interface.

As a result I got it all wrong. So I set about getting it all right. I just stuck at it every single day. Head…

A collection of my best short stories

Photograph by Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash

Since joining Illumination I have written quite a wide variety of articles, short stories and poems. However, like my life in general, it all became a bit of a clutter. So I have finally decided to try to impose some sort of order, starting with a collection of nine short stories.

My first attempt at the short story form on Illumination began with a series of three short pieces for children centred around a character called Katie. …

Illuminating What It Takes To Succeed As A Writer On Illumination

Photograph by Cottonbro on Pexels

As you read through this article, bear one thing in mind; myself and Tree Langdon, CPA, CGA, are fellow writers and co-editors of this article and we began our Illumination,Illumination-Curated,Technology Hits and Illumination Mirror journey just like you. Indeed, almost all who are involved in Illumination up to today, are relatively new to the project.

Nine months ago the Illumination publications didn't even exist!

They were created because of the visionary dreams and revolutionary determination of one man, Dr Mehmet Yildiz. Now they are positively flourishing and exponentially growing at an amazing rate every single day.

We now have over…

In the Autumn of my life

Photograph by Lazar Gugleta on Unsplash

It was a stunningly beautiful Autumn day, the azure blue sky acting like a blank canvas on which nature had decided to paint a masterpiece full of vibrant natural colours. A mosaic, leaf-confetti littered pathway led off to a vanishing point far off in the distance. On both sides, lines of skeleton trees, devoid of their summer foliage, stood like sentinels guarding the pathway to heaven. To each side mid-life evergreens acted as a natural bulwark to protect the open parkland behind.

An old man sat on a park bench just off to the right. He was dressed in a…

Nostalgia

With All The Promise Of A Brand Fire New Summer’s Day

Photograph by Conor Samuel on Unsplash

Liverpool in the swinging sixties. I have to say, my childhood was not an easy one. I was an undernourished and introverted child born and brought up on the wrong side of the tracks. I was bullied and beaten on a frequent basis at home, at school and out on the streets. I was once attacked by a group of fifteen sixteen year old thugs who left me for dead. I did not expect to live a very long life and at times neither did I desire one. There was very little joy in my young life apart from music…

Health Matters

An attack is like being hit by a forty ton truck

Photograph by Online Marketing on Unsplash

Be warned, PMR/GCA are much more than a pain in the ass. I’ve had a few lumbago and sciatica attacks over the years due to my sedentary occupation. And whilst both of these are quite painful conditions, they are nothing compared to what I got next.

Shortly before the Corona Crisis began I contracted two related conditions called PMR and GCA and they are sheer hell to live with.

It is not quite certain what all the causes that trigger it are, but I am convinced that sitting for long hours without moving is one of them. For me it…

The Bitcoin Inventor/s

Following the hidden trail to invisible money

Image by Bermix Studio on Unsplash

When you think about it, the idea of creating invisible money is brilliant. In effect, that is exactly what Bitcoin is. The transactions that take place online are between you and your computer. There is no middleman such as a bank and no internal revenue. Bitcoin is a totally unregulated field of finance. It is not too surprising then that lots of people, including the mafia, have taken that cash from under the mattress or wherever else they normally keep it hidden, and invested it in all sorts of cryptocurrency. Crypto of course says it all. The word means 'secret…

Musical History

The joy and sorrow of being a performing artist

Photograph by NASA on Unsplash

As a well known prolific writer across various platforms, Illumination being my current favourite, people could be forgiven for not knowing what else I get up to when I am not writing. At this point I should point out that I am also an author and writer of short stories and poetry with about eleven books out on Amazon. After that I turn my attention to music.

I am an accomplished musician (piano and guitar) singer songwriter, producer and arranger. Previous to the Covid 19 pandemic I was full time occupied performing live in the south of Spain (I am…

Educational reform

It's time for a revolutionary change in the system.

Photograph by JodyHongFilms on Unsplash

As a professional teacher of some forty years, teaching wide range of age groups covering quite a variety of subjects in languages and the arts, I have long since come to the conclusion that exams are not a good way to achieve what they are supposed to achieve.

The prime purpose of an exam is to establish, or to confirm, that learning has taken place and to what degree. Contrary to what many people believe, exams are not a sign of levels of intelligence. Exams are a test of class room attention, understanding, a measurable increase in knowledge and a…

Film History

The mysterious disappearance of the real inventor of film

Inventor Louise Aime Augustin Le prince

Ask any film buff you know who the inventor of moving film was and the chances are that they will mention Thomas Edison and/or the Lumiere brothers, In fact, both would be the wrong answer.

In 1888 a certain Louse Time Augustin Le Prince, a French man living in Leeds in the United Kingdom, invented the concept and the practice of moving film a full two years before Edison even began to experiment with the idea, let alone complete the invention. However, Edison won the legal battle claiming to be the sole inventor of moving film and as a result…
